Canada vs USA world junior hockey championship outdoor game between the United States and Canada is a go on Friday.
Tournament officials gave the go-ahead for the game to be played at the NFL Buffalo Bills’ New Era Field during a meeting Thursday. USA Hockey and organizing committee official Dave Fischer confirmed the decision in a text to The Associated Press.
Canada vs USA .World Juniors 2018 The forecast for Friday’s game at 3 p.m. Eastern time calls for temperatures between 15 and 20 degrees (-9 to -6 Celsius). The cold prompted some to wonder if the game might be relocated to Buffalo’s downtown KeyBank Center, where a majority of the 10-nation tournament is being played.
The preliminary round game between the U.S. and Canada will be the first outdoor game played at the international level. The Canadians have won their first two tournament games, while the Americans are 1-0 and face Slovakia on Thursday night.
The United States is the defending champion after beating Canada in a shootout in January.
A 30-minute practice was enough to convince Canadian defenceman Dante Fabbro that there’s no way to prepare for the cold of an outdoor hockey game.
“I don’t think there’s any strategy for staying warm out there, it’s pretty cold,” Fabbro said after a skate on the rink at NewEra Field, eyeblack still on his cheeks. “First five minutes it was freezing, I couldn’t even feel my face. But after the first five it was a lot better, kinda got warm. That’s all you can really do.”
Fabbro and his teammates had the practice at the home of the NFL’s Buffalo Bills to try and get used to the conditions a day before Friday’s big game against the rival United States in the preliminary round of the world junior hockey championship.
It was -10 Celsius — without windchill — when Canada stepped on the ice in the mid-afternoon. Head coach Dominique Ducharme had chosen a time close to the 3 p.m. start of Friday’s game so his team could get used to the glare reflecting off the ice at that time of day.
Fabbro is the only player on Canada’s roster to have actually been in a competitive outdoor game before as his Boston University Terriers beat the UMass Minutemen 5-3 on Jan. 7 at Fenway Park. His strongest memory from that experience was how cold it could get on the bench.
“I had my first shift and I tried to have a sip of the water and the nozzle was frozen,” said Fabbro. “Ice was tough too because there was a lot of games going on at Fenway. It’s a lot of fun but it’s a hard game too especially with a lot of stakes on the line.”
Ice conditions will be a major factor against the Americans. The ice can break off in chunks when players dig their skates in for speed, with starting goaltender Carter Hart noting that it made it a little more difficult for him to move laterally. The sky was clear on Thursday afternoon, but forecasts for Orchard Park, N.Y., predicted some flurries at game time on Friday.
Canada’s roster has been built around speed, so struggling to dig in on the ice could slow them down. But the American team also emphasizes quickness, so both teams will be handicapped.
“Just today we were working on simple chips, simple plays,” said team captain Dillon Dube, who thinks that being adaptable and consistent for the full 60 minutes will be crucial. “It’s going to be a meat and potatoes game. That’s going to be the fun part about it, is old-time hockey.”
Canada’s defensive corps was glad to have the day off and a short practice after back-to-back games to start the tournament.
Canada vs USA .World Juniors 2018 Several Canadian defenceman have struggled with injuries. Fabbro has been working himself back into game shape after sitting out four of five pre-competition games with a lower-body contusion; Kale Clague missed Wednesday’s 6-0 win over Slovakia after blocking a shot with his foot in Tuesday’s 4-2 victory against Finland; and Jake Bean saw limited minutes against Slovakia after a bad spill knocked the wind out of him.
However, all three practised on Thursday and are expected to be back in the lineup against the United States.
As veterans of Canada’s heartbreaking shootout loss to the Americans in last year’s final, Fabbro, Clague and Bean are anxious to get another crack at their rivals.
“I don’t know if anyone’s over it yet,” said Bean. “It’s kinda something that’s in the back of your mind and I think a lot of guys are excited to get back out there against them.”
The International Ice Hockey Federation announced that the game will set a new attendance record for the world junior championship with ticket sales already numbering more than 40,000. The previous record was 20,380, when Canada faced Sweden in the gold-medal game in Ottawa on Jan. 5, 2009.
Baseball’s World Series, which starts on Tuesday, pits the Houston Astros against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the finale of the Major League Baseball season.
Los Angeles Dodgers vs Houston Astros The Dodgers are one of baseball’s most powerful sides, perennial contenders in the National League (NL), but for the Astros, success has been elusive.
Astros pip Yankees to American League title
From baseball’s shortest player to the the Cuban defector nicknamed ‘the Wild Horse and the star with the supermodel fiancee, here are six facts you may not know about the teams.
Houston have never won a World Series
The Astros are among eight of the 30 current Major League Baseball teams that have never won the “Fall Classic”.
They joined the big leagues as the Colt .45s in 1962, becoming the Astros three seasons later, but have played in the World Series only once before – in 2005 when they were thumped 4-0 by the Chicago White Sox.
Los Angeles Dodgers vs Houston Astros In 2013, after 51 seasons in the NL, they were moved to the American League (AL), where the pitchers do not bat, and a non-fielding “designated hitter” is used.
The switch meant that each league now has 15 teams, and made inter-league play a regular feature. Before 1997, the only time National and American League sides played each other was in the World Series. Even after that, inter-league play was confined to a short period during each season.
Los Angeles Dodgers vs Houston Astros The Astros’ first season in the AL West division in 2013 was a disaster. They finished in last place, losing 111 of their 162 games. However, they reached the postseason in 2015, pipping the New York Yankees to the AL Wild Card while this season they stormed to the AL West title with a 101-61 record, 21 wins ahead of their closest rivals.
But however bad the Astros’ post-season record is, it is not the worst. The Seattle Mariners have never even appeared in the World Series, nor have the Washington Nationals (or their previous incarnation as the Montreal Expos).
Astros star is the shortest in the major leagues
Jose Altuve had the best batting average in the American League
The Astros’ success this year has been based on a powerful batting line-up which led the AL in most of the important statistical categories, not least most runs scored.
The key figure is Venezuelan second baseman Jose Altuve, who is the shortest player in top-flight baseball. Some believe he might not even be as tall as his officially registered height of 5ft 6ins.
Altuve’s height counted against him the first time he tried out for the Astros, who turned him down because he was too short. Luckily for them, he came back for a second try a year later.
His diminutive stature in a game increasingly dominated by titans has caused much mirth among baseball commentators, one even working out a way to measure the distance of home runs – or anything else – in Official Standard Listed Altuves.
Altuve posted the best batting average in the American League during the regular season, for the third time in four years – nobody else got close. He is also one of baseball’s best infielders.
Altuve’s former assistant general manager David Stearns has described him as an “anomaly”, adding: “He’s tough to explain, other than the fact he works as hard or harder than anyone, he’s got freakish hand-eye skills, he loves baseball and he wants to be great.”
Dodgers looking to finally make good
Los Angeles Dodgers players celebrate
The Dodgers had the best regular-season record in MLB this season
The Dodgers are without doubt one of the glamour franchises in baseball.
Los Angeles Dodgers vs Houston Astros On Opening Day this year, they had the biggest payroll in the majors by far, with a total wage bill of $242m (£183m). The New York Yankees were in second place at $201m (£152m), while the Astros trailed back in 18th place on $124m (£94m).
The Dodgers also earn more from television rights than any other team, and pull in considerably more paying spectators during the regular season to their vast Dodger Stadium, which has the biggest capacity in the majors.
But for all their pulling power, the Dodgers have failed to win a World Series since 1988.
That drought has been made all the more painful by watching their NL West rivals, the San Francisco Giants, win three World Series titles in the last decade.
‘The Wild Horse’
Yasiel Puig risked his life to play in the majors
Yasiel Puig – nicknamed the Wild Horse – is one of the more colourful characters in the Dodgers’ batting line-up.
The Cuban right fielder is man who wears his emotions on his sleeve, never short of an extravagant gesture for every occasion.
He has been in trouble on the field for making an obscene gesture to fans, and off the field for reckless driving, but all that is small beer compared to the risks he had to take just to get to the majors.
After repeatedly failing to defect to Mexico, he was successfully smuggled out of Cuba in a daring and complex operation which remains shrouded in mystery.
Puig and three companions had to trek for 50km on foot through dense mangrove swamps just to avoid police patrols and meet up with the team who smuggled him off the mainland from the infamous Bay of Pigs in a cigarette boat.
Los Angeles Dodgers vs Houston Astros A Mexican drug cartel is reported to have been involved, and the operation was funded by a group of US-based businessmen who expected a cut of Puig’s future baseball earnings. One was imprisoned for his role.
But for Puig, the risk has paid handsome dividends. He was reported to have been paid $17 (£12.89) a month to play baseball in Cuba. In 2012 he signed a seven-year deal with the Dodgers worth $42m (£31.85m).
Perhaps understandably, he has been reluctant to talk about the way he escaped Cuba, but he was quoted enigmatically in Los Angeles Magazine as saying: “Sleep is when it’s your time to die. For that reason I sleep with one eye open.”
Superstar with the supermodel fiancee
Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander with fiancee Kate Upton and the MVP trophy
Verlander was named as the most valuable player in the ALCS victory over the Yankees
With the division pennant a certainty weeks before the end of the regular season, Houston’s owners might have rested on their laurels.
Instead they made a huge statement of intent by securing one of the best pitchers in baseball, Justin Verlander, from the Detroit Tigers – right on the trade deadline at the end of August.
Verlander has a glittering CV. Four times he has struck out more batters than any other pitcher in the AL over a season, and in 2011 he secured the pitching “triple crown”, heading the AL in each of the three most important pitching statistics.
The superstar has been an immediate success with the Astros, and struck out 13 Yankees in Game 2 of the AL Championship Series, pitching the complete game.
Los Angeles Dodgers vs Houston Astros He also brings a touch of glamour to Texas: his fiancee is the supermodel and actress Kate Upton.
World Series 2017 As the Los Angeles Dodgers bide their time at home, the New York Yankees and Houston Astros will battle it out in a seventh game of the American League Championship Series on Saturday night at Minute Maid Park.
Home field has been kind to both teams, with the home team winning each game. The Yankees will try to counter that edge with veteran pitcher CC Sabathia getting the starting assignment. Charlie Morton will take the mound for the Astros.
World Series 2017 The seventh game is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET and will be televised by FS1.
The winner will go to Los Angeles for Game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday night at 8 p.m. ET. The Dodgers won the NLCS, defeating the Chicago Cubs in five games. Dave Roberts’ team earned the title Thursday night, and the manager will have a chance to set his pitching rotation and his lineup as the American Leaguers battle it out.
The World Series will be televised by Fox and will be live-streamed at MLB.TV.

The Dodgers have had a memorable season, and they are surging at the most critical time of the year.
They were the best team in baseball by a wide margin for three-quarters of the season, and they were on track to win 110 games or more through the middle of August. However, they hit a terrible skid late in the month that carried into the middle of September.
The Dodgers lost 16 of 17 games with the playoffs around the corner, and they did not look like a team that was capable of winning a series against a mediocre opponent, let alone beating other championship contenders.
They came out of their slump in the final 10 games of the regular season, but they appeared to be on shaky ground as they prepared to play the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League Division Series. They had been swept in two three-game series by Arizona during their losing skid, and the power bats of Paul Goldschmidt and J.D. Martinez loomed large.
However, Roberts and his team had no concerns, and they eliminated the wild-card winners in three straight games. The 2016 World Series champion Cubs were unable to come up with any solutions, either.
The Dodgers rolled to an 11-1 triumph in the fifth game and celebrated the National League title at Wrigley Field. Enrique Hernandez, one of the Dodgers’ role players, shocked observers with a three-home run performance that included a grand slam in the clinching game.
World Series 2017 The Dodgers have been getting clutch hitting throughout the postseason from a number of key performers. Third baseman Justin Turner is hitting .387 with three home runs and 12 RBI, while right fielder Yasiel Puig is hitting .414 with a home run, six RBI and six runs scored.
World Series 2017 This is one of the most unbelievable teams I’ve ever been part of,” Turner said, per Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times. “Every night, it’s somebody different, something special. You never know what you’re going to see, maybe even somebody hit three home runs in a series-clinching game.”
Cody Bellinger and Chris Taylor both have hit two home runs and driven in four runs, while Logan Forsythe is hitting .316 with six runs scored.
Starting pitchers Clayton Kershaw and Yu Darvish both have 2-0 records, as does reliever Kenta Maeda. Kershaw has had postseason struggles throughout his career, and while he hasn’t been lights-out in the postseason, he has a 3.63 ERA along with 16 strikeouts in 17.1 innings. Darvish has a 1.59 ERA and an impressive 14 strikeouts in 11.1 innings.
If the Yankees survive the seventh game, they will depend on their power bats against the Dodgers. Aaron Judge has hit four postseason home runs to lead the team after belting 52 during the regular season. Gary Sanchez, Didi Gregorius and Greg Bird have each hit three home runs in the playoffs.
World Series 2017 The Astros are led by American League MVP candidate Jose Altuve, who is hitting .405 in the postseason with four home runs and seven RBI. First baseman Yuli Gurriel is hitting .378 with 14 hits in the postseason, while Carlos Correa has three home runs and nine RBI.
While the winner of Saturday’s ALCS will have to leave everything on the field to earn the title, that team will be aided by two full days of rest prior to Game 1 of the World Series.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Michigan State Spartans Odds, Betting Pick The home team is 5-2 straight up in the last seven Michigan State-Notre Dame matchups, but only 2-4-1 against the spread, as underdog visitors have kept most games close. In the 65th edition of a great midwestern college football rivalry, the Irish battle the Spartans on Saturday night in East Lansing.
College football point spread: The Fighting Irish opened as six-point favorites, according to sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark. (Line updates and matchup report)
College football betting pick, via OddsShark computer: 29.2-23.6 Fighting Irish (College football picks on every game)
Check out the OddsShark podcast on iTunes or at OddsShark.libsyn.com for more picks and a breakdown of this week’s top sports betting news.
Why the Notre Dame Fighting Irish can cover the spread
Notre Dame bounced back from that tough loss to Georgia two weeks ago to beat Boston College last week 49-20. The Irish actually trailed the Eagles 10-7 late into the first half but used a 28-3 run to take control. They then later tacked on two more scores to secure the cover as 14-point favorites.
On the afternoon, Notre Dame racked up 611 yards of offense, including 515 on the ground. Running back Josh Adams ran 18 times for 229 yards, and quarterback Brandon Wimbush ran 21 times for 207 yards and four touchdowns.
Meanwhile the Irish defense stuffed BC on a key fourth down in the third quarter and forced three turnovers, all of which led directly to 28 Notre Dame points.
The Irish opened this season with a 49-16 win over Temple, covering a 19-point spread, before losing to Georgia 20-19 on a late field goal.
Why the Michigan State Spartans can cover the spread
After falling to 3-9 last year, the Spartans are 2-0 both SU and ATS this season following their 28-14 win over Western Michigan two weeks ago. Michigan State then enjoyed last week off.
The Spartans grabbed an early 14-0 lead on the Broncos and later pushed that advantage to 28-7 on their way toward covering a seven-point spread.
On the day, Michigan State outgained WMU 457-195 and outrushed the Broncos 296-116. QB Brian Lewerke accounted for 242 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns, while running back LJ Scott accounted for 111 yards and two scores. Meanwhile, the Spartans defense threw a shutout; Western Michigan’s only two touchdowns came on a fumble return and a kickoff return.
In fact, that Michigan State defense has yet to allow an opponent to reach the end zone this season. The only touchdown the Spartans gave up in their season-opening 35-10 victory over Bowling Green also came on a fumble return.
Michigan State might sport some impressive defensive numbers, but it hasn’t really played anybody yet. Notre Dame, meanwhile, just ran the ball for over 500 yards last week. Plus, the Irish might have revenge in mind after losing to the Spartans last year at home. Smart money here gives the short spread with Notre Dame.
College football betting trends
The total has gone under in three of Notre Dame’s last four games against Michigan State.
The total has gone under in four of Michigan State’s last five games.

If you’re a Vanderbilt fan, you haven’t been a staple on the league’s marquee game.
Week 4’s matchup against Alabama will be Vandy’s sixth CBS game since 1998, when the series began. In 2014, the fine folks at AL.com put together a comprehensive list of regular season appearances by teams on the network’s SEC game of the week.
To put things in relative terms: Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, LSU, and Georgia have each played on CBS over 50 times, and that’s even with a cap of four games per year per team. Texas A&M and Missouri have each appeared on the network in the regular season more times than the ‘Dores, even though both joined the league in 2012.
While the history is short, let’s look at the times Vandy’s been on the SEC’s grandest weekly stage.
Nov. 6, 1999: Vanderbilt at Florida.
The Gators weren’t great, and they’d lose three straight to end the season, but at the time, Florida was a one-point loss to Alabama in overtime away from being undefeated. No. 5 Florida played host to Vandy and found itself in a dogfight. With just over a minute left, Vanderbilt took over from its own 16-yard line, trailing by a touchdown. The Commodores would drive to Florida’s red zone, but fail on a fourth down conversion and fall, 13-6.
Nov. 27, 1999: Vanderbilt at Tennessee.
Vanderbilt would be back just three weeks later, but this was a day to feature Tennessee. The Vols were defending national champions, and it was legendary quarterback Tee Martin’s senior day. The Commodores had not won in Knoxville since 1975, and were fighting for bowl eligibility. They wouldn’t get it in a 38-10 drubbing.
Nov. 24, 2001: Vanderbilt at Tennessee.
Tennessee receiver Donte Stallworth broke the game open in the second quarter with a punt return for a TD. The Vols rolled, 38-0, and had their first shutout since 1998. Tennessee would notch season highs for sacks and interceptions. The Commodores would finish 2-9.
Oct. 19, 2013: Georgia at Vanderbilt.
After 12 years off the network, not only were the ‘Dores back on CBS, they were hosting. But they weren’t doing it at 3:30 ET. Instead, the game was played at noon ET, as one of CBS’ two contractually obligated double-header Saturdays.
This was not your parents’ Vanderbilt, however. They were in the midst of a second consecutive 9-4 season in James Franklin’s third year.
Vandy had sputtered to that point and was 3-3, winless inside the SEC. Jerron Seymour’s late go-ahead touchdown was the difference, and the Commodores won 31-27.
It was Vanderbilt’s first win over a ranked opponent since 2008 and a monkey off the back for Franklin, who was without a signature victory. After the game, Franklin preached business as usual.
But while he fought back tears at his postgame press conference, you could tell it was a huge win.
Sept. 12, 2015: Georgia at Vanderbilt.
The most recent time Vanderbilt hosted the SEC on CBS, things didn’t go so well. The Dawgs put it on Vandy, 31-14.
Saturday will be unlike any challenge the ‘Dores have faced recently.
For starters, Alabama and Vanderbilt rarely play these days. They’ve only met twice in the Nick Saban era. But the ‘Dores are riding high after stifling Kansas State last week.
In an increasingly confusing SEC East (3-0 Kentucky! Bad Florida offense! Bad Tennessee defense!), the Commodores are as much a favorite for the division as just about anyone else is, excluding Missouri. After quietly finishing 6-7 last season, Vandy is 3-0 and now noticeably good again, especially on defense. Entering Saturday night, K-State averaged 8.36 yards per play against FCS Central Arkansas and Charlotte. Vandy’s defense almost cut that in half (4.4).
After the win, Vandy fans chanted “We want Bama.” Well, y’all got ‘em. And ya got ‘em on CBS, too.

Ferguson vs. Lee Remains Headliner at UFC 216 Over Johnson vs. Borg The addition of a second world title fight will not affect the UFC 216 main event as the final bout order for the card was released this week.
Tony Ferguson will battle Kevin Lee with the interim lightweight title on the line in the headline bout, as both fighters look to establish themselves atop the 155-pound division.
There was some concern whether or not Ferguson vs. Lee would remain in the top slot after the UFC rescheduled the flyweight title bout between Demetrious Johnson and Ray Borg for the same night on Oct. 7. As it turns out, Ferguson vs. Lee will stay at the top of the card, while Johnson’s attempt to break the all time title defense record against Borg will remain in the co-main event slot.
The flyweight title bout was supposed to go down at UFC 215, but Borg was diagnosed with a viral infection during fight week and doctors ultimately pulled him from the event.
Now the rescheduled matchup is set for UFC 216 but Johnson vs. Borg will serve as the co-main event instead.
It’s also worth noting that the UFC 216 prelims will air on FX rather than airing on FOX Sports 1.

Gennady Golovkin’s legacy is at stake in Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler says negotiations for a rematch with Canelo Alvarez will be underway soon.
Golovkin defended his IBF, WBA, WBC, IBO middleweight titles by way of a split-decision draw against Canelo on Saturday (16 September) with the main talking point being the controversial 118-110 scorecard given by Adelaide Byrd.

The Kazakh (37-0-1 record in boxing), who many feel had just about edged the fight, was not happy with the result and is said to want an immediate rematch, ideally before May of 2018.
Loeffler has now revealed that discussions will take place on Friday (22 September), adding that the Golovkin camp expects negotiations to go better than the first time.
“We expect the negotiations to go better [than the first time], because Canelo has already fought 12 rounds with Gennady,” Loeffler told ESPN Deportes, as quoted on
The box office will be the third most successful in boxing history (in Las Vegas), the best event after a fight involving Floyd Mayweather, and in pay-per-event they did well, the two surely got their bigger purses and also the fans want to see more of this combination.
“We will start the discussions tomorrow (Friday).”
With Canelo preferring to return to action in May, there is a likelihood that Golovkin faces someone else in the interim, ideally in December. However, Loeffler claims the Mexican is the preferred first choice and that Golovkin’s legacy will be at stake in a potential rematch.
“Obviously there are options but what Golovkin wants is to face Canelo directly, it was his first big purse and it is his priority, the rematch,” he added. “His legacy will be at stake, with this fight reaching 19 successful defenses, a lot of people believe he won the fight and this will mark his career.”
“We credit Canelo for taking the fight, but we think he beat him well, so we will pursue the rematch and if he beats Canelo — then he will tie the 20 middleweight defense record of Bernard Hopkins and that would be something historical.
“We think we won, HBO had it right, eight rounds to four, the team is happy for the performance, Abel is happy, he thinks we won.
“Unfortunately the judges did not see it that way. Gennady wants the rematch as soon as possible, we do not want to wait too long. Canelo wants to fight in May, we hope to reach an agreement and GGG is willing to wait.”

That calculation was based on wage and other data and assumed workers would take about 20 minutes to gather their glasses, find a good spot and watch the show.
But the outplacement firm warned there isn’t much that companies can do about it.
“It’s going to be pretty difficult to get people to keep working when the solar eclipse is happening, and preventing employees from viewing it will probably do more to harm morale than to increase productivity,” Challenger said.
Today’s eclipse may help add to the body of literature on one lingering mystery: how do animals respond to nature’s grand celestial event?
Little research has been done so far, mainly because solar eclipses are so uncommon, said Margaret Rousser, conservation manager at the Oakland Zoo in California. Of the few studies that have been done, she said, here are some tentative observations: some fish return into their reef where they usually spend the night, spiders call it a day by taking down their webs and chimpanzees huddle closer together in their family group, as they would do at night – looking perhaps a bit anxiously up at the retreating sun.
“It’s something novel and they’re not sure how to react to it,” Ms. Rousser said. “It’s something they don’t know if it’s a threat or not.”
But Ms. Rousser said it’s hard to predict what each animal will do, because species may act differently. One thing is for sure, though, she said: they will be taken by surprise. “This is an event that comes out of nowhere for them ,” she said, “and they’re not real sure about it.”
CLEMSON, S.C.—Eclipse fans began gathering early Monday morning in Clemson, S.C., which is close to the center of the path of totality that cuts through the state and is expected to experience 2 minutes and 37 seconds of darkness.
The town of 16,000 people is home to Clemson University, which is hosting an “Eclipse over Clemson” event that includes a series of scientific presentations and family friendly activities starting late morning and running until the eclipse is over, just after 4 p.m.
All over this area of South Carolina, locals were renting out rooms to eclipse fans, while some businesses looked to cash in. One fireworks store advertised fireworks that last two minutes–just long enough for the darkness.
Fans made the trek to Clemson Monday morning from nearby towns outside the total eclipse zone and more distant locales, including New York City. While visitors to town headed to the university, some local residents planned to watch the eclipse at home.
Christy Hebert, faith formation coordinator at Saint Andrew Catholic Church, said she had kept her 10 and 13-year-old daughters home from school, and that the family would watch the eclipse outside next to their home. “I felt it would be better to be off the roads,” she said.
John Brancazio, a church volunteer, planned to spend the afternoon at his house on Lake Keowee, where his neighborhood is throwing a block party once the sunlight starts to return. He said he will turn the lights on in his pool before it gets dark, then watch the eclipse lying in the lighted pool.
The two were selling parking spots at the church to raise money for religious education. Businesses in town were also selling parking spots to arriving visitors.
Fr. Bob Menard, O.F.M, a Franciscan friar who is Clemson’s campus minister, said he didn’t have special plans to watch the eclipse, though he is looking forward to what may be learned from the eclipse. “From a scientific point of view, it’s an opportunity to do research that can’t normally be done,” he said.
Conor McGregor’s team are considering a request about who will referee the fight with Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission, who have placed veteran referee Kenny Bayless in charge of four of Mayweather’s previous five fights, are responsible for deciding the officials.

We know we can ask for our own ref, and they can ask for theirs. We’ll look into it, and see who we think would suit the fight.
“We’re still looking into our options,” McGregor’s coach Owen Roddy exclusively told Sky Sports when asked if they planned a request.
“We know we can ask for our own ref, and they can ask for theirs. We’ll look into it, and see who we think would suit the fight.”

McGregor’s team does not currently have any preference over the referee’s nationality, it was confirmed.
Retired Hall of Fame referee Joe Cortez has been working inside McGregor’s training camp to oversee the Irishman’s sparring.
“Joe comes in for fight simulation,” Roddy said. “Conor spars, and Joe refs the match like any ref would.
“That’s for us to become familiar with the process. That’s all it is.
“At this stage, we’ve had a ref for almost every spar, even back in Dublin. Conor has had so many spars in that regard – the ref wears full kit, goes through everything, then we spar. Joe is just the guy that we’ve been using because he was a great ref.”
McGregor was not using Cortez’s experience to learn how to bend the rules, it was clarified.
